A Clinical Study of Liver Cancer





Abstract
This report represents a clinical study of experience with 61 cases of liver cancer, which were treated
by surgical intervention at the Pusan National University Hospital during 14 years from Oct. 1957 to
March. 1971.
1. The age distribution indicated a predominant in 4th and 5th decades(57%).
2. The sex distribution assumed a ratio of 4 to 1 with 49 males and 12 females.
3. In past history liver cirrhosis was noted in 24 cases. Chronic alcoholism was noticed in 16 cases.
4. The predominat symptoms and signs were jaundice (98.4%) weight loss (95.1%) mild fever
(78.7%) and pain in the right upper quadrant (57.1%).
5. Of 61 cases of X-ray checking of the chest and abdomen, the enlarged liver was in 19 cases, gall
stones were uisualized in 3 cases and metestatic lesion in the lung was in 2 cases.
6. On admission, liver fuction test, especially, alkaline phosphatase was elevated in 31 cases(5%)
and bromsulphalein retention was present in 61 cases (77%).
7. Among 61 cases of histologic diagnosis, hepatoma was in 40 cases, cholangiocarcinoma was in 2
cases, and liver sarcoma was in 2 cases, the primary liver malignancy was io 44 cases and the metastatic
lesions was in 17 cases there were 1 case of malignant lumpholma and 16 cases of adenocarcinoma.
8. Right hepatic lobectomy was done in 11 cases, left hepatic lobectomy was done in 9 cases and
partial lobectomy was done in 9 cases.
9. Among 61 cases, the regional lymph nodes were metastasized in 38 cases, and lung ws invaded
in 2 cases.
10. The postoperative complication was hepatic coma in 8 cases and bile peritonitis in 4 cases.
11. Postoperative death was in 13 cases (48%).
